Mint Ice Tea

Last week I experimented with the mint we're growing in the garden, to see if I could make my own mint tea. Turns out it's easy, tasty, and very refreshing on ice.

Recipe For Hot Mint Tea:

Grab a couple of mint leaves (3-4), wash them, throw them in a mug, and add boiling water. Let it steep a few minutes et voila! Fresh mint tea.

Recipe for Iced Mint Tea:

Same as above, but you need to cool the tea (obviously!). I make a jug of it, by grabbing a handful of the leaves, and steeping them in about two inches of hot water, then adding cold water and ice after.

The mint tea can be sweetened with honey, but it's better without. Also, mint is good for digestion and settling stomachs. I've heard too, that if you drink a lot of mint tea your sweat is less stinky. True? Not sure, but if you try it, let me know!

urban farming

Summer is here! My roommate and I started a garden in the backyard. It's runs about 10 feet by 2 feet, along the north fence. We're growing three types of lettuce, sugarsnap peas, tomatoes, mint, basil, rosemary and parsely. I did plant some sunflowers and beans, but it seems some tiny creatures are taking advantage and leaving us with nothing but stems. I suppose that's the price you pay for not using pesticides.

This is the first time I've ever tried my thumb at gardening. There's something theraputic about getting some dirt under your nails. What could be more rewarding than eating from the harvest you planted yourself? No middle men; we planted, watered, watched it grow and now, we eat.

I've been enjoying walking out the backyard, ripping off a few leaves of lettuce, basil and parsley and creating some great salads. Take as I need, no waste. I'm looking forward to tomatoes in a few weeks.
